The Menisci

The Menisci (Netter 477-479) are semilunar fibrocartilage. Their femoral surface is smooth and concave and their tibial surface flat. They are thought to compensate for the incongruity between the tibia and femur.

Medial Meniscus: oval, crescent shape - Anteriorly attach to the tibia by the transverse genicular ligament and posteriorly to the fibrous capsule and deep surface of the tibial collateral ligament.
Lateral Meniscus: nearly a complete ring. Anteriorly attach to the tibia. Posteriorly attach to tendon of the popliteus.
