Our second night was spent at Muskrat Creek Shelter. The name may not sound too appealing, but this was a much better place to stay than the old shelter at Carter Gap. This is a fairly new shelter nestled alongside a mountain stream just north of the NC/GA border. Up on the hillside there is a privy and the shelter has a roofed in cooking area equipped with a table and places to sit. As darkness closed in we climbed a small knoll down from the shelter and watched the sun disappear from view behind distant peaks to the West. In the morning, it was blustery and cold as we descended down into Bly Gap and crossed the border into Georgia.
