Climbimg from Wallace Gap heading south on the Appalachian Trail we entered a world enshrouded in fog. A light drizzle kept us cool and refreshed as we made our way to Carter Gap Shelter. We had intended on staying at Big Spring Shelter, but since we were making good time we pushed on to Carter Gap. We ended up staying at the old shelter after apparently missing the new one in the fog. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming message scrawled on the wall of the shelter stating, "Welcome to Hell -- home of mice, skunks, and other creatures." As the message clearly declared this shelter was indeed a mouse haven. We have seen mice before on the trail, but they were never quite as audacious as the ones we saw on this trip. The mice were active popping in and out of holes in the sides of the shelter curiously watching us eat our dinner of noodles.
