A foggy and rainy evening at a packed to capacity Derrick Knob Shelter. There were sixteen people crammed into the tiny shelter. Actually, of all the shelters in the Smokies this was one of the nicer ones. With the exception of the chimney, which was not functioning properly the shelter was cozy and a refuge from the heavy rain and wind. The sign in the foreground indicates the Appalachian Trail. The small trail running from the shelter leads down a hill to a latrine area. The spring is on the other side of the shelter and is about 50 yards down a steep, rocky trail. |
