Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
mled is symbolically a reminder of the early text editors used in the computers of the seventies viz. ed under unix, edlin under CP/M. DOS etc.
mled was one of the first programs written using the IIT Madras software library and will most probably be followed by a more refined screen editor. But till such time, it can be used atleast to learn data entry in Indian languages, if nothing else.
mled is invoked from the command line or by clicking its icon as appropriate. mled requires one command line parameter which is the language in which one wishes to prepare text. The language can be one of the languages supported in the IITM system.
The mled editor works in two modes: command and data entry. When invoked it will be in the command mode. One will identify the command mode easily through the " XXX > " prompt at the beginning. XXX will be the current line number that the editor is positioned at and when the editor started this will be zero.
Commands may be extended as single character commands, preferably in English though the local language characters may be given. This may not work in some languages, since some keys may not be used as they do not correspond to valid characters.
The F1 key is used to toggle the keyboard from local language to English and back. The single character commands may be grouped into three groups as follows.
A small local language file which shows the contents of the screen as one uses mled, is included here for reference.
