John Luther Smith

 

John Luther Smith, the eldest son of Ezra and Margaret Ann, was born on 5 January 1846 in Woodsboro, Frederick Co., MD. He attended Woodsboro Public Schools until age 19. Chicken farmer.

 

John married Anna Victoria Ledwidge daughter of Owen and Lucy Elizabeth (Bowers) Ledwidge on 27 March 1873 in Frederick Co., MD. Marriage License issued 15 March 1873. Anna was born on 12 September 1848 in Troutville, Frederick Co., MD.

John worked his father's farm until 1873 when he moved to his own farm after his marriage. At first he rented the farm from his father, then he purchased it after his father's death in 1882.

John Luther and Anna Victoria had the following children:

  1. Myron Smith was born about 1877 in Maryland.

  2. Elmer Ezra Smith was born on 11 July 1882. Elmer married Rosye Belle Derr daughter of George N. Derr on 27 November 1907 in Frederick Co., MD. They had 2 children. He died on 31 March 1953.

  3. Morris Owen Smith was born on 21 October 1880. Morris married Augusta Bertha Brandt on 10 June 1915. They had 1 child. He died on 24 September 1953.

  4. Bertha Belle Smith was born on 7 August 1885. Bertha married Walter Clay Legore on 23 November 1906. They had 4 children. She died on 27 March 1962.

  5. Zelda Jane Smith was born on 28 December 1883. Zelda married Wilbur Frederick Krise on 31 December 1913. They had 1 child. She died on 25 December 1955.

  6. Florence Elsie Smith was born on 21 August 1875. Florence married Edwin Felty Geesey son of Edwin Daniel Geesey and Mary Ann Felty on 28 November 1906 in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA. They had 2 sons. She died on 14 March 1948.

The Smith family was active in the Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church in Woodsboro, MD. They donated a stained glass window to the church.

John Luther Smith died on 8 July 1917 in Woodsboro, Frederick Co., MD and was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro, Frederick Co., MD. Anna Victoria died on 27 April 1940 in Woodsboro, Frederick Co., MD. She was also buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
