Max William Maass, Sr.

Max William Maass, Sr., was the son Wilhelm and Emilia Maass who were both born in Germany about 1840 and died in the US before 1940. Max was born 6 January 1862 in Stettin, Germany. At about the age of 16 (1878) he went to London or Liverpool, possibly to avoid the draft in Germany. He eventually arrived at the port of New York port and settled in NY to make money. His family in Germany was wealthy and he went to private school. He played piano, accordian, cello and played in the orchestra. His parents (Wilhelm and Emilia) were in the import-export business and came to the US soon after Max.

Max married married Margarete "Meta" Hartmann daughter of Wilhelm and Anna Hartmann on 18 October 1894 in Brooklyn, New York City, NY. Margarete was born on 7 March 1872 in Hamburg, Germany and she came to the US on her own about 1893. They lived in Fairfield, Caldwell Twp., Essex Co., NJ where all of their children were born there except Alice and Marge. They rented a house on Laurel Ave, Livingston, Essex Co. and rented ground to farm. They moved into the home on Northfield Road, Livingston, Essex Co., NJ in 1913 or 1914. The house had been built before 1850. They rented a farm and then bought a farm in Fairfield. Max and Margarete became very sick and subsequently lost the farm. They then rented a farm in Roseland and bought a farm in Northfield. A fire in the Fall of 1917 "caused by Pfister" burned down the barn and all of the animals died, however, the son Ed saved their new car; dog alerted them to fire.

Max and Meta had the following children:

  1. Anna Emelia Maass was born on 6 September 1895 in Caldwell Townshp, Essex Co., NJ. She died of leukemia on 20 February 1971 and was buried on 23 February 1971 in Hillside Cem., Fairfield, Essex Co., NJ.

  2. William Maass was born on 12 February 1898. He died of poisoning about 1900, at the age of about 2 years old, after eating cucumbers in the field.

  3. Max W. Maass, Jr. was born on 11 February 1899 in Fairfield. He married Catherine E. Gordon before his father's death on 10 November 1929. They owned flower store in Hilton (Maplewood) New Jersey. In October 1934 they were living in Springfield, NJ. He died on 5 December 1982.

  4. Edward Arthur Maas, Sr. was born on 10 February 1901. Edward married Adeline Viola Reiff on 2 April 1927 in Livingston. His second marriage was to Beulah, probably married in Pompano Beach, FL about June 1968. He died on 4 April 1985.

  5. Rosa Emma Maass was born on 9 March 1905. She married Theodore Abraham Tyler - bethrothed 29 November 1928 and married September 1929 "about six weeks before Pop's death" (on 10 November 1929).
    In October 1934 they were living at 12 Stoney Hill Place, Livingston, NJ. She died on 27 March 1966 and was buried in Restland Mem Pk, East Hanover, Morris Co., NJ.

  6. Caroline Maass was born on 1 March 1907 in Fairfield, Essex Co., NJ. Caroline married Leon Harold Frischknecht son of John Harold and Doraetta (Milburn) Frischknecht on 13 October 1934 at Northfield Baptist Church, Livingston, NJ. She died on 21 June 1998 in Lake Worth, FL and was buried on 26 June 1998 in Restland Mem Pk, East Hanover, Morris Co., NJ.

  7. Emma "Bunny" Maass was born on 11 March 1909. In October 1934 she was living in Livingston, NJ. She married Thomas Raymond Fox on Saturday, 20 February 1965 at Roseville Methodist Church, Newark, NJ. In 1966 she was living in Newark, NJ.

  8. Margaret Maass was born on 23 July 1911 in Livingston, Essex Co., NJ. She died on 19 October 1999 in East Orange, Essex Co., NJ. She was buried on 4 December 1999 in Restland Mem Pk, East Hanover, Morris Co., NJ.

  9. Alice Elsie (Elaine?) Maass was born on 4 May 1915 (1913?) in the home on Northfield Road in Livingston, Essex Co., NJ. She married Walter E. Turner Saturday 16 October 1937 at Trinity Congregational Church in East Orange, Essex Co., NJ. Alice died 14 June 2002 in Centreville, Fairfax Co., VA.

Margarete died Friday morning 7 February 1918 at their home on Roosevelt Avenue, Livingston, Essex Co., NJ. She was buried in Hillside Cem, Fairfield, Essex Co., NJ.

Max William Maass died on 10 November 1929. He was buried in Hillside Cem., Fairfield, Essex Co., NJ.
