Nicholas Dellone was born in France about 1716. He arrived in America on the Phoenix, 15 September 1749. According to some sources, probably based on oral tradition, he was a French soldier who brought his uniform with him to the new world. At this time the French and English were enemies and the English feared French expansion in the New World. There were 550 passengers aboard the Phoenix, several with names that are associated with Conewago Chapel in Adams County, PA. The story goes that a young woman named Janet Dubourg was traveling on the same ship as Nicholas Dellone and they were married when they reached Philadelphia. They first settled in Angwick in what is now Cumberland county, but were expelled by Penn's civil authorities because this was still Indian territory. Nicholas may have been a French spy making several trips back to France, once for several years and his family feared for his life. He was a merchant in Lancaster and Berks County, and by 1762 he was living in Paradise Township, York County. He served in Revolutionary War in Capt. Peter Zollinger's Company.
Nicholas and Janet had the following children (birth order unknown):
Nicholas married (2) Hannah Kuhn. Hannah was born about 1715. She was named in his will. Nicholas died 3 December 1800 in York (now Adams) County, PA and was buried in Conewago Cemetery, Edge Grove.
