Approved Wireless Access Points
You must contact NST prior to initiating procurement of any wireless access point to be installed at MUSC, to ensure that the specific make and model of equipment has been tested and approved by NST.
NST has tested representative models of access points from a number of vendors, including the following:
- Agere
- Apple
- Avaya
- Cisco
- Dell
- Dlink
- Linksys
- Lucent
- Netgear
- Siemens
Based on our testing, we have concluded that enterprise-grade access points will be the only type approved for use on our network. Enterprise-grade access points allow for antenna power adjustments, RADIUS protocol support, non-broadcasted SSID and 802.1x support.
Approved enterprise-grade acess points are available from the following vendors:
- Agere
- Apple [note: limited antenna options]
- Avaya
- Cisco
- Dell
- Lucent
Other access points did not support all the features we require for use on the MUSC campus network. While these access points may be fine for use at home or in a small business, they do not have all the features required for secure operation in a large enterprise. Access points in this category, which are not approved for use on the MUSC network, include:
- Dlink
- Linksys
- Netgear
