Ryan Monfeli was a member of the Beeson Research Group from 2003-2008 during which time he was the lead researcher studying the mechanism of iron activation of the Iron Dependent Regulator (IdeR) Protein from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Ryan developed a number of agents that target IdeR and thereby block growth of Mtb. These agents are potential drug leads for treatment of tuberculosis, an infectious disease that affects about 9 million people yearly. Ryan completed his PhD in May of 2008 and started a posdoctoral position at the NIH this summer. He passed away suddenly on December 30, 2008. |
