Chemistry 241A Fall 1999

Organic Chemistry Laboratory
Instructor: Craig Beeson
Office: Bagley 209
Office Hours: Fr 0900

Required Text: Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques: A Microscale Approach, 3rd edition; Pavia, Lampman, Kriz and Engel (PLKE)

Required Handout: Chemistry 241 Supplementary Laboratory Handout; available at Odegaard Undergraduate Library Copy Center

Lab Lecture: M, 0830-0920, Bagley 154

Exams & Quizzes: Two in-class Exams, weeks 6 & 11.

LABORATORY SAFETY: All students in the laboratory are required by state law to wear Department-approved safety goggles at all times. Department policy states that "Undergraduates not wearing goggles will be DISMISSED from the laboratory immediately. A second infraction will result in dismissal for the remainder of the quarter. No make-ups will be permitted." Approved safety goggles are available from the University Bookstore. Students are only allowed to work in the laboratory during their scheduled sections and under the supervision of their assigned Teaching Assistant.

Laboratory Reports: Reports consist of a pre-lab due at the beginning of the lab period and a final report due at the beginning of the first lab period following the completion of the experiment. The pre-lab portion should be written in your lab notebook and a photocopy or carbon copy is to be given to your Teaching Assistant at the beginning of the lab period for that experiment. You will not be allowed to begin the experiment until the pre-lab is completed. Pre-labs for technique-based experiments should consist of a brief description of the procedure in your own words. Pre-labs for the reaction-based experiments should consist of balanced equations for the reactions, reagent tables, indications of possible side-reactions, summary of the experimental procedure and a schematic representation of the isolation/purification procedure. Examples of reaction-based experiment pre-labs are given in the Chem 241 Handout and in PLKE (pp 20-27). There is no pre-lab for the first experiment, Molecular Models. A handout for the final lab report will be given to you in lab. The handout contains sections to report your final results and questions about the experiment. The handouts will be distributed on the day of the experiment and are to be turned into to your Teaching Assistant at the beginning of the lab period following the completion of the experiment.

Laboratory Notebooks: Purchase a BOUND notebook; spiral and three-ring notebooks are NOT allowed. A thorough description of the contents and organization of your notebook is given in the Chem 241 Handout.

Make-up Lab: In the case of an excused absence from a lab, A make-up lab may be done during the 10th week. A proper excuse for the absence must be approved by your Teaching Assistant as soon as possible following the absence.

Lab Policies: failure to comply with the following lab policies will result in dismissal from the lab.
1. All students must wear approved safety goggles while in the laboratory. Wearing contact lenses in the laboratory is not recommended.
2. Dress appropriately for safety in the laboratory. Shorts, very short skirts, open-toed shoes or sandals are not to be worn in the laboratory. Lab coats or grungies are recommended.
3. You are only allowed to be in the laboratory during your scheduled lab period.

Grading: There are 11 prelabs @ 5 pts = 55 pts, 11 lab reports @ 20 pts = 220 pts, 2 notebook checks @ 30 pts = 60 pts, Models/NMR handouts = 45 pts, and 2 exams @ 150 pts = 300 pts. Class Total = 680 pts.

Lectures: The lectures consist of discussions of the theoretical principles underlying the techniques used in the lab. Sections in the text related to the lecture material are listed below. You should read the relevant material prior to attending the lecture (with the obvious exception of the first lecture). Brief disscussions in lab, in addition to performing the experiment, will familiarize you with the practical aspects of the techniques. There are also several reaction-based experiments in which the techniques you’ve learned will be applied.

Homework: The assigned homework problems will not be collected. However, many of the questions on the Lab Reports and the Exams will be closely related to the assigned homework problems.
