General condition of (mouth and) teeth (OHQ010X)

Data Release

NHANES 1988-1994

NHANES 1999-2002

Variable name

HAQ1

Describe condition of natural teeth

OHQ010

Describe condition of mouth and teeth (include false teeth and dentures)

Codes

01=Excellent

No category for Excellent

02=Very Good

1=Very Good

03=Good

2=Good

04=Fair

3=Fair

05=Poor

4=Poor

06=Has no natural teeth

88=Blank but applicable

7=refused

99=Don’t know

9=Don’t know

The category “Excellent” was included in NHANES 1988-1994 but not in NHANES 1999-2002.  The programs for the MMWR Surveillance Summary create a variable OHQ010X for both NHANES, collapsing the “Excellent” and “Very Good” categories into one category labeled “Very good”, parallel to the NHANES 1999-2002 variable.  (see programs nh3ques.sas and ohdques.sas)

However, the variable is not perfectly comparable between the two surveys.  Analyses limiting the population to dentate participants may reduce the impact of the wording change on results.

6=more than 5 years ago

00000=none/never

7=never have been

88888=Blank but applicable

99999=Don’t know

99=Don’t know

Variables lastden and lastdenA were constructed from these variables in the programs (nh3ques.sas and ohdques.sas).

These variables have 4 categories:
 1 = 1 year ago or less
 2 = 2 years ago or less
 3 = more than 2 years ago, but not “Never”
 4 = Never

Lastden treats special codes 88888,99999,77 and 99 as missing data.

LastdenA groups codes 99999 and 99 for Don’t know with category 3 = more than 2 years ago, but not "Never".  The rationale is that participants who respond “Don’t know” have had a dental visit at some point, probably longer than 2 years ago, but are not sure when it was.
