Root Caries variables differ between NHANES 1988-1994 and 1999-2002. 

In 1999-2002, two variables contain whole-mouth indicators of presence or absence of untreated root caries (OHXRCAR) and of treated root caries (OHXRRES). 

In NHANES 1988-1994, 112 variables indicate root status for each of 4 surfaces per tooth.

 For NHANES 1999-2002, an additional variable was calculated to indicate root caries experience (having either untreated or treated root caries).  (see SAS program ohddent.sas)

 For NHANES 1988-1994, three whole-mouth indicator variables were calculated from the tooth-specific variables, applying the same names and codes. (see SAS program nh3dent.sas)
