Periodontal variables

The periodontal exam in both surveys randomly selects two quadrants, one upper, one lower and collects pocket depth and calculated loss of attachment (among other measures).

NHANES 1988-1994 and 1999 collected data only on mesial and distal sites.

In 2000, the distal site was added and the mesial and mid-facial sites shifted (mesial towards interproximal and mid-facial towards furcation). Data for the distal site was not released for 2000 due to risk of disclosure. However, data for distal site are available for 2001-2002.

NHANES 1999-2002 includes 28 variables for each periodontal measurement type for each of 3 sites (mesial, mid-facial/buccal, distal).

The variable naming scheme follows the numbering for coronal caries tooth call variables in 1999-2002 (beginning upper right 2^nd molar=tooth 2 and lower right 2^nd molar=tooth 28).
Only two quadrants are probed, so for each participant, variables for non-selected quadrants are not populated.
The variables for distal site are populated only for the years 2001-2002.

NHANES 1988-1994 includes 14 variables for each periodontal measurement type for each of 2 sites (mesial, mid-facial/buccal).

The variable naming scheme has a different pattern than the numbering scheme for coronal caries tooth call variables. Perio variables begin with upper central incisor for the selected upper quadrant =1 and the 2^nd molar for the upper selected quadrant =7. The variable name indicates with a U or L the upper or lower quadrant. Left or right quadrant is not indicated.

Other than naming conventions, the coding is similar between surveys and several calculated periodontal indices are calculated using common names.
