Tooth count and coronal caries variables

NHANES 1988-1994 used two types of variables for coronal caries: coronal caries Tooth Call and coronal caries Surface Call variables.

NHANES 1999-2002 used an additional type of variable: Tooth count.

The naming scheme for tooth variables is not the same.

NHANES 1999-2002 counts beginning with 1 as the upper right 3^rd molar and ends with 32 as the lower right 3^rd molar. Tooth place number is in the center of the variable name, rather than at the end.
NHANES 1988-1994 counts from the upper left central incisor (1) back to upper left 2^nd molar (7), then back to the upper right central incisor (8), and so on. Variables for 3^rd molars have a different naming scheme.

The naming scheme for surface level variables is also different.

NHANES 1999-2002 uses 1 variable per tooth to store a string value, where each 1-digit code is specific to a surface*condition combination (e.g., occlusal with filling). These variables are populated only for teeth with decay or fillings. Only one condition is recorded per tooth surface (i.e., for an occlusal surface with both decay and filling only the combination for occlusal with decay is recorded for that surface.)
NHANES 1988-1994 uses 1 variable per surface, numbering the surface variables in a similar manner as for teeth, from upper left central incisor to upper left 2^nd molar. There are 5 surface variables per tooth, including a filler variable for occlusal/incisal surfaces of anterior teeth. The filler variables contain no data, but are supplied for ease of automating calculations.

Tooth count is coded:

1 = Primary tooth (deciduous)
2 = Permanent tooth (succedaneous)
3 = Implant
4 = Not present
