About the Chronic Disease Indicators project (CDI)

Back to NHANES

To support uniform definition, collection and reporting of chronic disease data, the CDC, CSTE and CDD developed indicators of chronic disease.

The first set of indicators, published in 1999, did not include oral health indicators.  The revised set, published in 2004, included three oral health indicators: past year dental visit (#90), past year dental cleaning (#91), and complete tooth loss among adults aged 65 and older (#92).

CDI publishes indicators adjusted for age.  This adjustment removes the differences between states and demographic groups that may be due to differences in the age distributions.  CDI uses the age distribution standard recommended by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).1
